Climbing Mt. Semeru, Rinjani, Kerinci, especially Everest, is the dream of everyone who likes to climb mountains. However, behind the feeling of being happy to go up the mountain, there is a disease to look out for.
Hikers who like to climb mountains are likely to get altitude sickness. Altitude sickness is a common condition that can occur when someone rises to the plateau too quickly. This condition often attacks climbers who are at an altitude of more than 2000 meters above sea level.
What is Altitude Disease?
Altitude sickness can be caused by cold air, low humidity, increased ultraviolet radiation, and decreased air pressure. The amount of oxygen will thin out in the highlands. As a result the body must breathe faster to get more oxygen. Altitude sickness is generally characterized by several symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, no appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, feeling weak and tired. If you want to go up the mountain, you should know how to deal with this altitude sickness. How to Overcome Altitude Disease
If you experience or find someone who has altitude sickness, you can do the following ways:Break
If you feel signs of altitude sickness, try to rest as soon as possible. If your body condition is better, it is recommended to go down at least 300 - 600 meters from where you are. Do not rise again until the symptoms disappear completely. If the symptoms are getting worse, try to get down to the lowest possible height and seek medical help immediately.
Oxygen therapy
Providing pure oxygen can help with severe respiratory problems due to altitude sickness in climbers. At least, breathing will improve for a while. However, the effects of oxygen therapy are less effective when compared to lower altitudes. People with altitude disease with severe or bad symptoms have to go down the mountain, even after receiving oxygen treatment.
Drugs
Painkillers can be used to treat mild headaches caused by altitude sickness, for example paracetamol. If you experience nausea or vomiting, antiemetic drugs such as prometazin can be used to relieve nausea in altitude sickness. If you have difficulty breathing, an inhaler with high blood pressure is thought to reduce the pressure on the arteries in the lungs.
Other actions
If the symptoms of altitude disease are mild, don't climb higher, at least for the next 24 - 48 hours. In addition, it is recommended to drink plenty of fluids (non-alcoholic), not exercise, don't smoke, and you should rest until you feel much better.
